Curious if some people are wearing masks and such on the plane, or if that would even help at all?

I'm sure somebody out there on some flight somewhere is wearing a mask (actually, it's kind of a common sight when flying ANA into and out of Tokyo, because it is considered impolite in Japanese and several other Asian cultures to not wear a mask, usually cloth, if a person has any kind of cold or flu symptoms, or even allergies, anything that might cause them to cough or sneeze).

As for your wife wearing a plain surgical mask to protect against Ebola? No, that's not going to help, she's still going to rub or touch her eyes or face and/or want the mask off at some point (like when the "meals" are served). And it wouldn't help anyway, since the purpose of a plain surgical mask is to protect the patient (or fellow flyers, or whatever) from coming into contact with your aerosol contaminants, not the other way around.

I guess if she really wanted to a) look like a paranoid freak and b) be very uncomfortable during the whole flight whilst c) not doing anything to protect herself from Ebola, she could go with a 3M N-95 Particulate Respirator with a one way valve, allowing her to breathe out relatively comfortably (compared to a N-95 mask with no valve) but not allowing her to breathe in any aerosolized whatever. Again, even with a valved N-95 mask (which are, FTR, extremely uncomfortable after about 5 minutes), she's still bound to rub or touch her eyes and/or remove the mask at some point. And of course, there's the whole Ebola not being airborne thing, too, so again, wearing a valved N-95 would be completely pointless.

Washing your hands often and well is still the best defence against every kind of virus. Soap and water. Every chance she gets, she goes and washes her hands. That's it.

Yeah that's kind of what I figured.
Thanks

Airlines frown on sneaking a pee on a seat leg. Or, taking a dump in the aisle.

Just exercise common sense - stay home.

Someone has to clean his cabin, and his poop is going somewhere on the ship.

Since neither of is using smilies, you may want to know my sarcasm meter was pegged. You may want to turn your sarcasm detector on.

And REALLY WTF is with cruise ships? You name a fking new disease, or shit even an old one, and my God, it's headed for the cruise ship!! Makes me want to make that as my top vacation choice.

Oh and noted in one of the Ebola threads: New toilet seat cover user here!

Oh, I've seen very very very bad explosive dumps on airline seats. Not something you'd want to be around.

Once upon a time I worked for Southwest airlines cleaning the inside of the airplanes. You'd be amazed (or maybe not) how many people change their babies' diapers in the seat and then put the dirty one in the magazine folder.

12+ hour flight back from China. Lady brings one diaper for said flight. Sitting/shitting one row from me. Jesus.Obama.

I was going to puncture the fuselage to escape.

CDC to revise Ebola protocol: no skin showing

"Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said those caring for an Ebola patient in Dallas were left vulnerable because some of their skin was exposed.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working on revisions to safety protocols. Earlier ones, he said, were based on a World Health Organization model in which care was given in more remote places, often outdoors, and without intensive training for health workers.

"So there were parts about that protocol that left vulnerability, parts of the skin that were open," Fauci said."
