I have a 2000 chevy silverado 3/4 ton 4x4 longbed extended cab with the 6.0 gas and it hauls my boat no problem. Before my boat I had a 24ft travel trailer and it towed it no problem....I also have the tow/haul package on the truck. I bought the truck brand new and have never had trouble with it.

I'm a Dodge man, have 06 Ram 1500, it's rated for 7,800 towing I think, has the hemi, up to 122 thousand miles on it. Bought a pop up trailer tent camper, it's 3,400 pounds empty plus 2 adults, 3 kids, 2 dogs and all the crap to go camping for 1-2 weeks, truck does fine, feels great with it behind it and still will go 70-80 on the freeway easy.

The only problem is the mileage isn't great, I average 12-14 normal driving which for me is 5-10 over the posted limit normally, then 8-10 loaded down with everything for the trip. But it also has a leveling kit and bigger tires, exhaust, cold air intake, plus it sounds so nice when you give it the go juice.

My wife had a 2010 Ram 1500 with a hemi, leveled with bigger tires and such too, got a little better mileage and power, plus it was rated for 9,000 pounds(maybe more)

The newer trucks have advanced leaps and bounds the last 5 years, the interiors are far superior with the new gadgets and such.
Going diesel with newer trucks can be better but they're also a lot more spendier to maintain and diesel is general however much more per gallon, plus the 10 plus grand more to start out out the lot, plus the stupid diesel exhaust fluid you gotta add to keep the epa happy. Pretty much all newer rigs can go forever with good maintenance as long as it doesn't get the fun electrical problems that can happen.

thanks... I'm leaning towards RAM after I found out you can get a lifetime extended warranty (non-transferrable but no limit on miles/years) for around 2000$ or so.. not a bad deal if I end up keeping it forever...

Mopar® Vehicle Protection is offered with a wide variety of time and mileage terms, typically up to 7 years and 100,000 miles. Lifetime plans have no time limit on mechanical coverage, but only for the original owner; they are not transferable unless required by state law.

how has your 1500 been reliability wise? anything breakdown yet (tranny?)

DIESEL! I have had two 1995 gas trucks, and was happy to get 10 mpg going downhill with a tail wind. My current is an 8L V10 Dodge that gets 7.5 mpg. Most newer diesels get better millage than my Subaru.

This is pretty much the answer. When Ford still had their twin I beam front suspension I would say Ford for sure. These days the big 3 are pretty much neck and neck.

Just a little history on myself, I'm a 21 year veteran diesel mechanic. My love for diesels runs deep, but diesels are a work horse. Let them idle around most of their lives and they are worthless. A good mid sized gas V-8 is the answer for the occasional trailer towing, yard waste hauling daily driver truck.

I will third this opinion.

I prefer gasoline, only because 99% of my driving is without a heavy load. I don't care about mileage, I really don't (buy a Subaru if such things worry you). If you want to go up to the F-250, by all means do so, but I am just now on my second (both new) F-150, and they are more than adequate.

Please do not buy the 2015 F-150 (all alloy body). Bent alloy frames cannot be bent back into shape--ask me someday how I know this. Purchase the 2014 models if you can. Please do not purchase the silly Eco Boost versions (V6 with dual turbo chargers)---they will break, and double your headaches.

To summarize: Truck drivers should be prepared for the mileage (17MPG is my average), if you want to bitch about that, don't buy the vehicle. Half-ton is sufficient for most light hauling, with your boat a 3/4 ton or 1 ton would be OK. Buy steel frames (no monocoque bodies, or alloy frames). Class dismissed.

Been working on diesels since 1980 and still at it.
Plus an minuses.
Solely depends on what your going to use it for AND how you drive. If you space out after a couple hours on the road towing and just keep up with traffic, going up hill, get a gas mtr. Seen the go pedal destroy many a diesel mtr.
If pouring urea into def tank every so often, higher price for simple filters, high quality oil prices and not buying diesel at the cheapest place but a place that does high volume, get a diesel. Avoid def and get something pre 2008.
I can't give an unbiased opinion on a dodge, haven't worked on a Cummins since 1989. Wanna talk Ford 7.3, 6.0 and chev 6.6 great. Newer diesels are spendy and I won't own anything post 2004 1/4 and would avoid the 6.4 like a plaque. 6.7 stepped up the game, along with price.
I've got a 2003 F350. F250/350 same trk, different spring packs, that's it.
I "can" get 20-22 mpg on the freeway on cruise. Around town and back an forth to work I pull in 14-15 mpg.
I've loaded 4100 lbs in back of mine, bags helped. Normally pull a 30' trailer now but few years back would haul my race car, trailer and all spare parts all over WA and MT without an issue and running overly hard still hit 11-12 mpg using only egt and boost gauges to manipulate the go pedal.

I have a dodge 1500, my dad has a newer tundra. He has wayyy more power and gets way better mpg. It's smoother driving, more car like interior. He has a 30' camp trailer, we both have towed it and his sags more when it is loaded up. I haven't looked up what the tow rating for either is but there is that. My truck is older and trucks have changed 11 fold in the last 5 years.

problem is payback. When I bought my F-350 the diesel option was around $3500...and diesel was (I think it still is) more expensive

Diesel Pros:
More torque
longer life (depends, I've seen gas motors go over 500K)

Gas Pros:
less noise
no smell
cheaper cost of purchase
cheaper cost of operation (my oil changes cost $20 or less, diesel oil changes cost over $100)
cheaper fuel
easier to find fuel (not so much anymore, but 10 years ago this was a deal breaker)
weight, my gas motor has no intercooler, no turbo, less oil.....I think it was a 500lbs difference

This guy knows his shit. I will add my 2 cents and it goes along with his. I would avoid a dodge. I loved my 2001 Cummins, but the truck lacked a lot in the quality department. I currently have a 2000 7.3 Excursion and love it. It will be with me for a while. Older trucks do require a little more to maintain, but it will be way less than the 60K you will drop on a new truck. As far as new stuff goes, I would not look too far into a 5 year or newer Diesel, unless you are doing some serious towing they are overkill. The newer half tons are better at towing than a 1 ton from the 90s. I have heard amazing things about the F150 EcoBoost. I have 4 buddies that own them and swear by them. They Tow like hell and 23 MPG. The resale on a ford or chevy will be higher than a Dodge. Dodge does make a much better truck now than they did 15 years ago. Back on the Diesels for a minute, Anything in the last 5 years is about the same with the exception of Chevy having independent front suspension. A little more to work on, but handle much better. They are all damn good trucks, but will be expensive to fix in about ten years. Curious, How much does your boat weight?

I'll agree with most of this. Our fleet trucks are 2012-2014 F150's with the EcoBoost. We tow 6000-8000# trailers with them regularly. The trucks get 10-12mpg towing, and 18-20 unloaded. We do run a canopy, bed slide, and ladder rack, which certainly costs some fuel mileage. The EcoBoost 3.5 V6, once you get over the idea that you bought a truck with a V6, is actually a damn fine motor. For what you're suggesting, it would be a good fit, and a lot of these trucks are going to start showing up at reasonable 3-4 year old used prices very soon.

Towing?

Dodge
Diesel
2500 series +

Don't bother with turbos on a smaller engine. Run slow and low with a diesel and get years upon years of use out of your truck.

5,000 pounds barely counts as towing, and really, what percentage of the time is it going to be doing even that?

Optimize vehicle choice for what you actually do.

That said, my personal truck is a 1T dually diesel Chevy.

i have a 2003 Silverado 3/4 ton regular cab w/ 6.0 gas. while it's good for towing cars and such, it's mostly just a Lowes/dump run truck. mileage ain't great.

best friend has a 2006 Silverado 3/4 ton crew cab diesel that he hauls his 25' fishing boat to the coast with. if i had to tow something big like that i think i'd go with the diesel too.

good trucks.
