Myself and my family have owned every generation of Ford and Dodge diesel pickup, and three of the generations of GM pickups. Been a professional diesel/heavy equip mechanic for 21 years. I have my preferences but so do others and opinions are like butt holes in that regard.

That said. Unless you absolutely NEED a diesel pickup, don't buy one. New ones are a $10,000 premium over a gas truck and with the advent of the EPA requirements have lost most of their benefit over an equivalent gas truck.

Older diesels are a crap shoot. Many, many, MANY of them have not been treated properly by owners who had/have no business owning diesel trucks. Quite a few newer models are problem children to begin with and older trucks are getting on in years to where other important pieces of the undercarriage and power train will be showing their age.

My personal truck is the last of the 7.3L Super Dutys but for a non-enthusiast owner who doesn't really need a truck with an oil burner in it, it's a loud/noisy, stinky, expensive to insure, expensive to maintain, uncomfortable to ride/drive, "cool looking" truck that has minimal practicality outside of towing heavy things a long ways and getting compliments on looks from boys aged 5-55 and girls aged 6-25.

And please everyone, stop putting a G in Cummins. There are two hard facts about Cummins. 1) Ford never owned them. 2) There is no G in the name.

Is a "cummings" a Japanese knock off of a Cummins engine or a freudian slip?

about 5K unloaded including trailer.. probably 6K with gear...

but eventually I want a travel trailer like some of those posted up here... I'm towing it with my ml350 bluetec with no issues... I just don't want to damage the ml350 towing it 1600 miles up some mountains... thus trying to justify a truck (really lame excuse but we all need to justify things so we can have our WANTS -- not needs)

my cousin has the tundra and I have to say the interior is nice...

The Toyota Tundra is an over built half ton. It is a beast. Toyota did there homework on that one. They knew they had to be serious in order to break into the American truck market.

Check out this video. Toyota gave a rancher a truck then tore it down to every last nut and bolt. Impressive to say the least.

And, just a little friendly advice. Especially if you end up with a Cummins. Dont be that Dbag driving around town, or anywhere really, with the tow mirrors flipped out unless you are towing! If I cant you doing that I will throat punch you. Such a douchey thing to do. Have I mentioned I hate that and it looks fucking ridiculous?

Hahaha... I've seen that before... my armada had tow mirrors, it was more difficult to use deployed but sometimes I've driven home from the storage yard with it deployed since I forgot to push it back in..
