I do. I totally do. Norman and Lily both were adopted through the National Great Pyrenees Rescue. Hank (my Turkish Angora cat) was removed from the home of a very specific type of hoarder--she had a thing for purebred cats, as opposed to mixes. Norman was part of an actual cruelty case in Oklahoma, found with 81 other dogs chained to dead and dying horses and goats. All but four of those dogs (Norman among them) were euthanized. Lily was found at five weeks with her dam and littermates--alive and dead--in an irrigation ditch in West Texas. So all of my pets are "secondhand".

Fostering spayed female Great Pyrenees (GP) transported by NGPR out of the South (especially TX, OK, and AR) is what I do now. I turn down applications to adopt every single day. Everyone sees a cute fluffy GP puppy, or sees the beauty of an adult GP, and thinks, I can handle that, I'll "save" them. No, actually? NGPR took care of the saving part. I talked to a family that sounded perfect yesterday about adopting a dog arriving on a transport towards the end of this month. They sounded perfect...right up until I asked for a veterinary reference. Whoops. Their last dog (not a GP) had only been to see a regular veterinarian when a) she was hit by a car--meaning she was off the leash, out of the yard and not under voice control and b) she was put down. Into the round file with that one.

And yes, my judgment is clouded by my own personal experience with pit bulls and pit bull mixes. It's not the media doing the clouding, it's maybe the scars on my lower right leg that I earned by trying to step into a dog fight between Norman and an unaltered, male pit bull mix whom the owner was unable to control. There is nothing *quite* like hearing your own tibia crush--adrenaline protects you from actually feeling it until you feel the squishiness in your shoe, and realise that it's blood, and then you start to lose consciousness. You manage to hang on long enough to call 911 and you barely manage to call a friend. Norman, snow white except for what are called "badgering" colourations on his face, had so much blood on him after that incident--mine, and the pit bull's--that he went to an emergency veterinary clinic to verify that he was not injured. Responders to the scene included King County Sheriff's deputies, Bellevue Police, and fire and EMS, plus KCAC. It was a nightmare that I do not wish to relive.

There was no good outcome for the pitbull mix that initiated the fight, and there was no good outcome for the dog's owner, who ended up being sued by Premera Blue Cross. Not me, my insurer.

I sincerely hope that this works out for this dog. I sincerely hope that a home with the financial and temporal resources to responsibly raise a high-energy, high-drive breed becomes available.

Don't listen to the hater, TW. I think you did the right thing, both in taking the dog in and posting here to try to find her a home. You bought her time, which may be all she needs to find her forever home and avoid the needle. If I was in a position to take her, I would. Good luck finding a home for her!

Ok, maybe that wasn't exactly what you said, but it's what it seems to boil down to. Your graphic description aside, your experience does not (or maybe should not is the right term) label all pit bull breeds as aggressive killers, nor should the laxness of that owner label all pit bull breed owners.

I've been attacked by dogs too. Once by a German Shepard, once by a rottweiler. Neither resulted in the kind of injuries as your experience, but both were terrifying at the time. I'll admit to a little hesitance on my own part when dealing with Gsheps now, but I would not pound a pulpit and decry the entire breed as monstrous. You've taken an act of kindness by a board member and used either your hatred of the breed of dog or dislike of the member (or maybe both) to twist it into something wrong.

TW, a lot of the things you post made me facepalm. That said, what you've done here restores my faith in you (not that you needed my faith to validate your life, you don't). Kudos to you, good sir. I award you one Internet.

Anybody that's been around a Boxer knows there's enough Knucklehead in that breed to quell even the meanest of any other breed they're bred with.. They're almost as bad as Irish Setters.


She looks plenty knucklehead.


IMHO if this dog was mean the previous owner would have had it put down before trying to find her a new home....mean dogs suck for everyone. She would have just had to drop the dog at the HS.

Taking an animal off death row and actively seeking a good place to reintroduce to the general population has to be admirable. Since when did any crazy pet owner not provide what the animal needed and most of the time more than was needed (you know who you are crazy dress and accessorize the pet people). I do believe the masses here alone have shown that if we have an animal in need it gets taken care of.

Who cares what breed or all the other bullshit in this thread.
The one thing you should be doing if you really care about fogs is getting her fixed.
The root of the problem of pets being killed in shelters is that there are more needy pets than willing owners. Unless you are a licensed breeder I believe all house pets should be fixed. Period!

Stepping in the middle of a dog fight...

The dog was pinned multiple times by Norman (GPs generally use their massive bulk and thick coat to deflect attackers), kept getting up and charging at him and myself, then turned on his owner. I stepped between the dog and his owner. I suffered the consequences. I dropped Norman's leash and told him to leave it, which he did, right up until the dog bit me and I screamed. I didn't feel pain at the time, just the sensation of the dog's teeth piercing my jeans and skin.

As for those calling me a "hater", this was not my first incident involving a pit bull or pit bull mix not under verbal or leash control. Dogs run loose in my neighbourhood. Many, if not most, are pit bulls or pit bull mixes that people have attempted to surrender at the Humane Society and have either chosen not to do so because of the surrender fee or who have been turned away. Very few encounter Lily and Norman more than once. My dogs are always under leash and voice control when we are out walking, and they do not make undo eye contact with or confront other dogs.

I have no problem with people who understand that high-energy, high-need dogs like pit bull/pit bull mixes, German Shepherds, and other breeds, need extra socialization, extra training, and a low-stimulus environment.

Auuuugh I want that dog so bad..... but I really shouldn't, my current living situation doesn't offer nearly enough space as that dog would require. I really hope you find her a good home, though.

We are eager to give her a forever home if the logistics work out. I'm out of state and won't be back there until 26 Feb.
That is a bit too long for TW to wait.
