I was reading an article on Japan a FB friend posted and saw this one. It's wiki... But it shows some interesting numbers for the gun control countries.

I've seen a show on the suicide forest in Japan, it's crazy.

Yep. Been there, hiked through it. It really is beautiful. The canopy is so thick that GPS is of limited value, but a compass can always get you out. The point is: If you want to get lost inside, it is really easy to do so. And, many do just that.

Suicide as a means to deal with insurmountable problems is cultural. Whereas suicide is (was?) considered a mortal sin in the Christian countries ('your body is a temple...'), the same norm has never held in Japan. News of one's suicide is met with dispassionate understanding, rather than morose. It is complicated.

Are you suggesting there is a correlation and in which direction?

Since 2000 they all seem very clustered except for Switzerland (what's up with that?) and Japan, which is a straight cultural thing.

Switzerland has a high gun ownership rate...

His point is the suicide rate is still extremely high in a country where private gun ownership is practically outlawed. Gun control does nothing to curb suicide, but anti's still push that lie.

Well there are plenty of people here kill themselves with guns. But my experience has been if they are determined enough they'll succeed. We had one guy had 3 attempts.

But still, you can't really prove either a lack of correlation or a lack of causation. Maybe the rate of suicides in Japan would be even higher with more gun availability? Who knows. There are plenty of countries with tough gun rules with a lower suicide rate than the US. As you say, it doesn't prove that's the reason why either.

Yep, if you want to kill yourself, the availability of a firearm doesn't make much difference.

“Not surprisingly, suffocation as a suicide method was more common in areas where firearm prevalence is lower. Increases in the use of suffocation were similarly greater in states where gun ownership is less common.”

Also, doubling or tripling up is common too. Drink some industrial cleaner, shoot yourself in the head. etc.
People who use guns tend to be more "successful" when they use the gun.

I'm confused here... Are you being sarcastic and mean to Mr CurtisLemansky or the one who asked the question to which he is responding?
I normally don't read the other fellow's posts, but Mr CL's response seemed quite proper.

There's a strong streak of insult running through a lot of the threads here on WaGuns and every time I see it it surprises me. Eventually the surprised feeling will fade and the resignation will set in, and I will consider myself a poorer man for it.
Most of us feel a bit snarky occasionally but some folks seem to simply stew in it every day and look for each opportunity to insult someone else. *think think*

No I didn't mean him I meant in a general sense. That guns have nothing to do with it and it's clear as day. Late night. Drinking and all of that.
