So as long as something is codified into law (or interpreted by a court opinion as being protected by a law, as is the case with abortion) - no matter what it is - support of it is not extreme?

I think you are blinded by personalities. Compare the DNC and GOP platforms to take individuals out of the discussion. Those differences should be quite evident.
