In search of... designs for steel plate target stand

Since they've done the welding, though, it'll cost ya!

If OldKim would learn to weld, I'd let him use one of my welders to make his own for a lot less, and my 'T' cross piece idea could be incorporated for better L-R balance (presuming he has two equal-weight targets to hang). You'd still have to carry a small sledge downrange (and back) to 'plant' the T-post, though, and that may exceed whatever his load limit is.

As for cost - I will say $30 for all parts. I used steel conduit pipe 1/2" at 10 feet sections for $2.45 each.

It works! Holds this 1/2" AR500 silhouette target that weighs just over 50lbs.

Legs don't move and the biggest draw back is the size. It takes up a lot of room.

I have not field tested with actual rounds but I have kicked it hard a few times to test stability.




All the designs have their merit. And granted if I had room to weld, etc then more design features are available.

My focus was for an average "Joe" to go and put together a stand from available parts with only the need for some basic tools.

And keeping in mind the cost!

So why not poke/drill 3 holes in a triangle into that fire hose and teepee that thing.

Well the other focus is "public" shooting the target.

If you can shoot 2" groups at 200 yards then you can do a lot without worrying about losing a stand leg it other damage of a "group shooting" scenario.

Legs are far... Far spaced for the average shooter and from the regular splash of a hit.



Also, the size of the intended "target"
For me it's a 40-60lb steel plate.

For smaller 4"-8" rounds a tripod design would work just fine. I remember MadPick has that exact setup using rebar for the tripod legs on his 4" diamond and 8" round.





But come to the clean up "North" on April 4th and shoot it and see what you think for yourself.

Okay here is an update.

Please remember the limits of my build was to take off the shelf items and make a stand. No welding....

Here is the targets. Gen 1 and 2.

The taller is Gen 1 and shorter is Gen 2




Both stands took a lot of hits from all comers.

I gave the target and stand (Gen 2) away at the shoot!


Here is the target after getting a leg shot.


It still stood to take more until later I finally shot the rope at top from splatter.

Lots of ideas from the actual use. So Gen 3 may be better or not... Will have to see at the next pit shoot.

These are available commercially... There are more. I just chose Amazon since if you have Prime (shipping is most times free). Granted some comes with a target and legs, etc. But you get the idea. It's not cheap.

I will suggest you use duct tape and/or add a screw to each leg so you can tie it down to the cross member. Makes it easier to move and secures the legs.
