Anti-austerity protesters set fire to German police cars (from Fox News via the Associated Press) Quote: At least four police cars were set alight and two officers injured Wednesday as authorities confronted violent anti-austerity protesters ahead of the inauguration ceremony for the European Central Bank's (ECB) new headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany. . . . Protesters said they are targeting the central bank because of its role in supervising efforts to restrain spending and reduce debt in financially troubled countries such as Greece.

I'm just dumbfounded by the ignorance on display. There can be no functioning country or EU without sustainable fiscal and economic policies. If debts and deficits are leading to defaults on existing loans and the inability to secure new loans, then the path is clearly unsustainable, and the obvious solution is to balance budgets and reign in spending (a.k.a. austerity measures). Why is this even a debate?

Why is this even a debate? my point was that the financial issues are similar to what Europe experienced during the Great Depression and Germany seemed to be the only country with and answer and it eventually led to Germany thinking they should run all of Europe....now we have the same kind of circumstances and Europe going along with it (locating the central bank in Germany)...maybe the new Germany will accomplish what Hitler couldn't and without firing a shot

Why is this even a debate? Agreed. Now if we look at how the US budget is run, we can see this as coming attractions here.

Read between the lines....
reduce spending = cut social programs, Ie welfare benefits
