Never shot IDPA before ... should I bring a double stack gun or will I be competitive with a single stack gun?

As long as it can hold 10+1 or 8+1 if you shoot .45.

Thought this would be a good place to ask.
I'm looking to get into IDPA but I wanted to just watch a match or two first to get an idea of the speed/skill required. All the stuff I find online is of like... super master champion pro operators or some crap (they're really good

) and I would like to get an idea of entry level skills required before I jump in. Is it normally okay to just observe the match, or do they only allow participants into the action bays when there's a match?

You can watch not a problem. The Tuesday Night Pistol League @ WCA is mostly beginners so you don't have to worry about being out classed. There are a handful of guys that are pretty good there include one or two master class shooters but don't worry about them.
Since you're just starting, I would watch these videos in order so you can start learning.

Speed is not required.
The only skill required is to be safe and follow the rules.
Don't worry about whether you'll suck or not. Many of us fall into that trap . . . don't do it. Just say "fuck it, I'm just here to have fun" and then do exactly that.
Go slow to start, and keep safe. Don't worry about your score . . . AT ALL. Just relax and enjoy and learn.

Bring what ever you are most comfortable with. Don't worry about being competitive, take your first couple matches nice and easy. The most important thing is to be safe and have fun!

You are welcome to come and watch anytime, there is no charge to watch. Come to WCA on Tuesday nights or Renton Fish & Game on the 18th or Paul Bunyan range in Puyallup on the 25th.
MadPick is totally right. Don't worry about speed or how you do. Just be safe and have fun! You will get penalized for rules you don't know about, just don't worry about it. You can read the rule book before hand if you like but there is not enough time to cover all the rules in the New Shooter Meeting. The New Shooter Meeting mainly focuses on safety and covers the major rules.

It is fine to just watch. I am a total n00b. Do dry fire practice and have at it. Trying to make it Tuesday.
Speed really isn't important to me. I am just having fun and making it through without losing points.
Speed is for the pro's, I am just going for a smooth run.

Traffic was atrocious but well worth it.......
What the hell's with Seattelites not being able to drive in the friggen rain?
Met another WaGunner there...he and his kid will shoot in two weeks
I'm old and cant remember what his WaGun tag was.
It happened! I was there and my son can vouch for it!
It was great to meet you WaJim! Thanks for all your guidance. We will be back to shoot after spring break.
We were impressed with how low key and approachable the whole situation was. When you watch videos from the internet you think this is going to be a super fast display of superior shooting skill. My son said it best, "It is just a bunch of normal, nice people." I was encouraged by the fact that many people just took their time and worked the stage carefully with no concern about speed or looking good, just trying to be safe and have fun at their own skill level. We will certainly be there to shoot in the future.

These videos are great, thanks for the link.
Sadly I seem to have misread the time for the Tuesday night league, for some reason I thought it started at 8, not ended. Looks like I won't be able to make those, hopefully the Saturday ones at Renton are as newbie friendly.

Yeah, WCA is 6-9pm. Renton is 3rd Saturdays from 9:30a till 3ish.

For Renton you need to be there before 8am, the New Shooter Meeting starts at 8am. Renton is a good match, usually 7 stages so its a lot more shooting then at WCA. If you go, post up and if I decide to go we can squad together and I'll help and coach you through the match.

Go slow,-slower than you plan to
Stay safe
Have fun
And ask lots of questions. The folks at wca and Renton were all observers or first time shooters too at some point, they will be happy to answer your questions.
Best gun-handling skill training for the dollar, imho.

Thanks for the offer! I'm hoping to be able to make it this month, but May for sure.

Since you're just starting, I have a compiled list of local clubs and when they hold matches on my site that can help you.
