Unload your gun before you clean it.

I don't know if anyone ran across this article, but apparently a man in Shelton was cleaning his gun and it went off, hit his wife square in the chest, and killed her. The head scratcher to me is the gun was a .357 revolver. I can see if you were cleaning the outside of the gun, but even then there would need to be some pure lack of brain power for this to happen. Maybe he was decocking the hammer I don't know, but either way it seems kind of suspicious.

I grew up with a guy who did the exact same thing (drinking and breaking the four rules, pointing an "unloaded" gun) to his best friend - took the manslaughter charge and did 5 or 6 years. He keeps up a tough front but I have to figure he's tormented by it. |

I think the "I was just cleaning it and it went off" has become a rather standard defense tactic. I suppose it can help turn murder into manslaughter if you stick with that story

Well yeah, if they can knock Murder One down to manslaughter just by claiming, "I was just cleaning it, yeronner" they will do just that. Looks like a clear case of "I don't want to you be alive anymore" but hey, not a lawyer.

I don't think the "cleaning it and it went off" fits all situations. ex: wife walks in on her husband who is with another woman..."she was just helping me clean It and it went off." Parent walks in on son....I think you get the idea. It is sad that someone had to be at the end of his stupidity. |

On the jail booking list he is in for negligent but I suspect the DA is still figuring out what to charge him with.
Pointing a gun at someone and pulling the trigger should be manslaughter at a minimum. |
