I read this article and have mixed feelings. I don't understand the crime. If she isn't complicit, then it's very mysterious.
The death penalty has always been a bit of a love/hate thing for me...
I love it when the genuinely bad guys end up napping forever. Yay!
But when it is misused (and I consider it a misuse if there is still a reasonable question as to innocence) then it is a terrible injustice. We hear of people spending 10, 20, 30 or more years behind bars only to be exonerated after all that time by a verifiable confession or DNA evidence... That's a shocker, and quite a vote for putting the death penalty away except for in the most extreme and rare circumstances.
But... I live in this society and I hate evil with a passion. I am subject to mistakes by LE and prosecution the same as any of my fellow citizens.... and I would prefer there to be the legal authority to turn the Charles Rodman Campbells of this world into fertilizer.
I hate true evil even more than I do the errors.

Simple. Take the high road, abolish the death penalty and take solace in knowing that with lifetime imprisonment, at least the human filth can do something useful like make license plates. Killing somebody in custody who has no chance of ever getting out only satisfies the primal desire for revenge.

Thats great but im not a fan of going to work each day knowing that ANY portion of my income is taken from me and used to provide three hots and a cot for rest of thier worthless life
yes we need to error on the side of caution considering the finality of this type of punishment but it needs to exist a some folks are just fucked in the head and there aint no fixin' it
Well that and prison and jails and sentences need to be at least a wee bit less pleasent, make the fuckers work all day instead of arguing over whats on tv
Make the place a disincentive, NOT a way of life or a pause from reality

Mitchel Rupe killed my bank ladies at Tumwater State Bank. I had deposited money from my paper route the day before and my house was about 0.4 miles from there. Fuck him. He needed to die in a way he couldn't choose. The only good thing about his death is that he suffered first. Twila and Candice were great ladies who did not deserve the savageness he unleashed on them.
Some case, where there is a question, sure. Other cases where it is game, set match from the outset, bullet to the back of the head and leave them in a field to rot.

That's the way that I feel.
The tough part is who gets to decide what level of question still counts as reasonable? I'm not an expert.

That's why I am in favor of prison labor. Also, it has been shown that the cost of administering the death penalty can exceed the cost of life imprisonment.

The article that starts this thread indicates why dragging ass is a good thing at times.

Rupe was a fat piece of shit and a little bitch... And I'm for the death penalty. They get everything they want. 3 meals, warm bed with extra blankets, cable tv, and I'm tired doc keeps these fucks around forever to go over budget and I never get a fucking pay raise. In fact my paycheck is less now than it was 8years ago...

And probably a good case for why things are set up the way they are. Lots of shitbags commit far more heinous acts with way better evidence and dont get anywhere near the death penalty. So the way i see it there needs to be some reform and continuity as well as a whole hell of a lot more disincentive in the system

Entirely understand. Where is the line drawn? Take the pair who murdered their family on Christma Eve in 2007. They admitted to it. Good enough or me. Put the fork in them. Others, not so clear.

What's the punishment for robbing someone of 22 years of life?
The whole moral vs legal thing rears its ugly head.
I'd say let her do what she wants to the guy, 'convict' her and let her go with 'time served'....

Whats the going rate for 1 .380- 9mm bullet these days? $0.35? Yup wayyyyyyyy more costly than keeping them locked up for life..lets just wall mcneil island off and let them roam free there...among others of their kind..see who survives and who doesnt.

For the record, I'm still undecided on the concept of capital punishment. I do firmly believe the state, with all its incompetence, has absolutely no business dispensing such punishment at present time. Maybe if there was some reform of the criminal justice system, making it so prosecutors and judges don't have ulterior motives when trying cases (they're human, and numerous have admitted to massive mistakes while being guided by politics). Maybe if they stopped sentencing people to death with circumstantial evidence. Maybe then I would consider it.
Until then I do have a question I've asked myself many times... as civilized people in a civilized society, shouldn't we be better than the killers of this world?
