Any suggestions for an EDC blade for defense (when I can't carry my pistol)
I have a Cold Steel knife currently:

What do you like for say 80 dollars or less, assist opening, 3 inch blade (which seems to be needed for most municipalities)?

I love my Zero Tolerance 0360, but a 0350 would be cool too.

thanks. Looks like they are a bit north of the $100 mark.

Buy once, cry once, carry for a life time. Gerber Applegate / Fairbairn folder.
And, a Leatherman multi tool for the dirt work.
Save the blade for the soft stuff.

I really like the Kershaw blades for a budget conscience EDC folder.
I'm currently running the Volt II.
The 8Cr13MoV steel sharpens fairly easily and keeps an edge well for the daily chores I task it with.
The pocket clip is reversible and sturdy enough to keep the blade where I put it regardless of whether I'm wearing jeans, Khakis, slacks, or board shorts.
Got it for around $25 at Big 5 on sale. Solid enough for daily use, but cheap enough that I won't get bent if I loose it for whatever reason.
My next EDC blade will likely be the Enzo Birk 75. It's not an assisted opening knife, but it has a Scandia grind D2 Carbon Steel blade and carbon fiber grip scales with a deep pocket carry clip. Unfortunately, it's right at the $100 mark new. I've seen some used ones go for around $75 on eBay, though.

How much do you spend on firearms and ammo? Somethings are worth the cost.

Find a spyderco or benchmade that you like.
Preferably 3" or less so you don't have to deal with any city ordinance issues.
Abuse the crap out of it for the rest of your life.
That's how long it will last.

I would get a Benchmade Mini-Griptilian. Midway has them for as low as $89.25 shipped to your door right now. Great knife for the $.

I'm partial to the Benchmade Griptilian and Mini-Griptilian. Plain edge or combo edge (#551 Griptilian, #556 Mini-Griptilian) as well as a tanto blade option (#553). Great quality and still affordable.

For <$80 I'm happy with my SOG Trident or Aegis

Putting in my 2ยข here. A few weeks ago I picked up the Zero Tolerance 0560BW, mostly because I finally had to see what a $240 knife was like. Beautiful knife, and tough as nails but it's my weekend carrier. It's bigger than it looks and if I pulled that out in the office to open a box or something, I think some people would be a bit concerned. So this week I picked up a Kershaw 1556BW Cryo II for $32. Has the speedsafe opening and is the perfect size. I carried around the Cryo I for a few years and if this is just as good, then I'll have no complaints.
I have the SOG Trident as well, but I wasn't digging it as an EDC. The assisted opening on mine felt sluggish. It's a light knife, and I like a little more weight on mine.
EDIT:
Oh man that orange handle CRKT looks great. Might have to pick one of those up. I have an older model of the M-16, also a great EDC.

My EDC is now the Kershaw that Sergey did the group buy on...but in my purse is a Leatherman Surge w/a bit kit, a smaller mini Leatherman on my keychain, a Res-Q-Me on my key chain, a credit card knife in my wallet (two, actually--one is the Bear Grylls [no laughing] survival knife/multitool) and another multitool (Spark multitool, just a knife and corkscrew with a refillable butane flame function).

Current for me is the Kershaw Brawler. I like the thicker grip, considering what it'd be used for if the need arises.
