If you think about this a little bit, you may get a feel for how a police officer feels when
a half dozen people whip out their cell phones to record his interaction with a suspect.
It boils down t that old "no expectation of privacy in public" thing.

If you do some internet research back to when this first broke, you will find information saying that the post office in question didn't know anything about it being there...so they called the PMG. The PMG didn't seem to know anything about it and said he was calling DHS...the next day the device was missing.

Now we can say the PO knew...or since they have no real reason to lie about it, we can assume they really didn't know. Sounds to me like DHS...who is known for tracking people...might have placed the camera on federal property as part of some "hunt". Once exposed...the pulled it.

Or just as likely, someone (mumbling " fucking Government overreach...) backed thier truck up to the thing, knocked it free, threw it in the bed and took it to the nearest body of water and pitched it.

Apples and oranges. A police officer is a public servant interacting with the public in a capacity wherein he/she has the authority to wield power over one's life and liberty. Often (too often these days) that power is misused. A private citizen visiting a post office is just that, a private citizen who is entitled to freely travel about. While I agree that the idea of recording people who go to the post office isn't a big deal (and something I always assumed was happening anyway), to compare it to recording a police interaction is kind of stretching it.

They are recording addresses....they deliver the mail to.....that is public information....that you can find on the internet....

1. We know that companies have systems that deletes footage after 24-72 hours, automatically.
2. We know how the companies are using (or in most cases, not using) that footage.
3. Companies don't record license plates, to catalog owners of vehicles.

The gov't has no legitimate reason to PERMANENTLY keep a list of packages sent/received, by and to whom, to use license plate readers at their facilities, etc.

The potential for abuse is too great. Same goes for tracking people with EZ Pass, or any OTHER surveillance platform.

Just sickens me that so many people are just accepting of shit like this and shrug their shoulders...


If a company 'abuses' that data, I get junk mail and coupons in the mail.... If Gov't abuses that data.... ???

The gov't exists to serve itself....
