I've recently been observing some of the continuum of mental illnesses at a hospital and there are people who are not dangerous to anyone, dangerous to themselves, dangerous to others, and it certainly is complex. Is it easy to imagine someone falling through the cracks in outpatient care, definitely. Are there enough resources to treat everyone who needs it as an inpatient, no.
The other issue (back to the pilot) - if there was mandatory reporting (e.g. for pilots with mental health issues) would people avoid treatment, definitely.
There are no simple, easy answers.
Yeah, I agree. Trying to pull a positive out of the tragedy. Hopefully this can be used to figure something out. This wouldn't have been avoided if there were no guns, like so many think about mass shootings.
