I remember thinking something similar when up in Alaska on business last year...what if I accidentally found like a ten pound gold nugget? Yay I'm rich. Now what? Not like it's gonna go unnoticed in my carryon luggage. You'd need the right kind of friends to make something like that disappear.

Seriously though,a 10 pound nugget is worth more as a specimen than smelted down. Plenty of people in Alaska who could safely and properly handle the sale of something like that.

The upkeep and maintenance on those can be a pain in the ass. Most financial institutions have shifted away from those.
