I remember thinking something similar when up in Alaska on business last year...what if I accidentally found like a ten pound gold nugget? Yay I'm rich. Now what? Not like it's gonna go unnoticed in my carryon luggage. You'd need the right kind of friends to make something like that disappear. :alcapone:

Not to my knowledge. That's done inside the bank.

Wouldn't that just be considered pure good luck?
I'm assuming that you didn't find the gold nugget in a shop selling gold nuggets.

Check mining laws. You'll get a finder's fee at worst, keep the whole thing at best, and IIRC until you convert it to bullion and sell it, there is no taxes, and if you are really clever, and sell it to a refiner for gold or silver coins, then you are getting legal tender in trade... and I'm not sure what the IRS does at that point.

Somehow I imagined the taxman would take issue with me suddenly having several hundred thousand dollars in untraceable assets with no reportable source.

But now I'm not sure.

Off to research.

It's been a while since I read up on mining laws, but I'm pretty sure until you convert the gold to cash, it's not taxable.

TSA would probably just steal it anyway like they did with my knife last week. :angryfire:

Fedex it :045: Seriously though,a 10 pound nugget is worth more as a specimen than smelted down. Plenty of people in Alaska who could safely and properly handle the sale of something like that.

The upkeep and maintenance on those can be a pain in the ass. Most financial institutions have shifted away from those.
