Knives as a primary/secondary?

Tue Apr 07, 2015 8:21 am

Ok, so 37 days ago (who's counting) I messed up my back. Because of how it is injured, I have not been able to carry via IWB or OWB... Basically, I haven't carried my XDsc in over a month, and I hate it.

Yes, logic says buy a pocket carry yadda yadda, but I'm not going to buy a micro until I can do a side by side with the XDs 9mm and G43. But, let's talk knives.

Honestly, I don't like being unarmed, and by that I mean defenseless, not gunless. Luckily, because of my back, I am using a cane to help me a little, and that cane is a bad ass African Walking Stick. So I can break their faces with that, but I am also looking for something a little more personal.

I remember at SHOT show this year, we stopped at the KA-BAR booth and were playing around with some of their nifty pointy things. One knife that piqued my interest were their TDI Knives. So, a couple days ago I bought a couple, one in black and one in Coyote. They come with a sheath and reversible clip for IWB/OWB/Molle etc etc.

One of them came yesterday and I switched it to left handed operation (since I am a lefty) and clipped her on. Over the next hour or so, I was playing with different positions on the belt and am just dumfounded how I should mount this... They all feel comfortable.

Does anybody carry a similar concealed draw knife?

Right now I am carrying it strong side, right where my holster normally is. I like this area, as long as I can REMEMBER not to fucking index the knife like you do a gun while drawing. This is more difficult that it sounds. Part of my thinks that it should go on my right side, like my normal, daily kershaw pocket knife, so when I do start carrying again, I can continue to carry the knife as well, if I choose.

Any thoughts, opinions? She's pretty small, and very concealable, and carries very comfortably.

For a everyday/utility knife, I carry in my pants pocket on my primary side for simple ease of use.

For a knife that's primarily a defensive tool (or in my case, a tactical pen), I'd carry somewhere on your reaction hand side, opposite your holster. The idea here being that it can be used to resolve any grappling or retention issues around your holster area if something were to happen.

That being said, I wouldn't ever try fighting against a knife with a knife. The loser of a knife fight dies in the street, and the winner dies in the ambulance.

I too have a TDI that I carry occasionally.

While I'm not too keen on the retention of the stock sheath, in IWB configuration, it's never been a problem.
I generally carry it sandwiched between my belt and pants.

Another great fixed blade that I carry periodically is my ESEE IZULA.

I made a custom sheath that deep conceals it in my front pocket:

Just need to be careful of city ordinances that prohibit carry of fixed blade knives, though (IE: Seattle)

Well there's your problem! :wink05:

Using a Knife as a self-defense item...poor idea.
Guy with a bad back, using a knife as a self-defense item... terrible idea.

I view knives as a tool, and a last ditch defense item.
Remember, the winner of a knife fight, is the guy makes it to the hospital.
Knife attacks take mobility. A bad back mean you are likely to hurt yourself trying to fight with the knife long before you get to the BG.

Get one of those BUG shirts for your 43 and a few hawiian prints to go over it.
If you can bend over to tie your shoes...get an ankle holster and a micro 380.

Not to mention that you got more range with the cane than you ever will with a knife.
You could always get one of these..

I'd stick with the cane over a fixed blade knife. You have a force multiplier weapon in hand versus a potential crime in your pocket.

But if you want a knife I'd go with one of these. I have the 0360 and would trust my life with it.

Biggest problem with using a knife in a fight is that the bad guy has to get way too close for you to use it.

Also, you don't have a large variety of targets with a knife so speed and precision are required. Knives are for cutting flesh or soft tissue. Give me a stick any day and I'll shatter bones through a thick jacket.

My mother-in-law has one of those Zap Defense Sticks. She pulls the trigger on that thing and it makes me jump!!!!

Sword Cane. Club or stab, your choice.

Use cane. flip to groin, follow up with thrust and push at base of throat to take off balance. Strikes to forearms and then shoulders. Follow up as needed.
Very easy to master, very effective.

and statistic wise you have a better chance dying taking a poop on a toilet than having to have to shoot or cut someone

The cane is my primary, no doubt... This is something where if I am on the ground, as a secondary. I know that I am in no shape to go toe to toe with anybody... Hell the office cat almost took me down this AM just by tackling my leg!

No doubt a gun would be better... No doubt a zap stick would be nice.... But I have what I have. My ED Knife is still in my right pocket, and used for ED purposes too.

I had a bum back from being in a car accident and couldn't carry for a long time either.

Can you carry somewhere else? SOB maybe?

Kel Tec P32. Problem solved. Stick the ten round mag in there, load it up with good Czech hardball, good to go.

What others have echoed though, carrying a knife when physically injured like you are is a good way to get fucked up. I've had first hand experience with the same problem, I would NOT want to be using a knife to defend myself, because within the first three thrusts/strokes of the blade, you are sure to twist yourself the wrong way and just fall over in agony. Seriously, at this point, switch to a shoulder holster or get a proper pocket gun and carry it owb. If you think .32 is too anemic, get a little LCP or P3AT.
