S5 or S5 Active?

Wed Apr 08, 2015 5:12 pm

Time is approaching quickly to replace/upgrade my smart phone. I have settled on the S5, but I am not sure which one, regular or the Active?

Leaning toward the Active but anyone used either or both and have a recommendation?

Active simply because it's more waterproof

I have the active, my wife has the regular s5. Both are great phones. The only drawback with the active is an AT&T programming glitch that makes the home button link to the google search. Every week I have to hard restart the phone to make the home button work properly. Other than that it's great. The built in case is also nice but if you want extra protection the aftermarket is more limited for the active model cases.

I got a supcase, it's outstanding.

By hard reset to you mean shut down and restart the phone or something deeper? I hadn't heard about that bug.

I have the same issue. There is an app you can download to semi-fix the issue. It will still try and open the google search, but will go back to the hope page. The app is called swipeup utility. It works as a crutch.

active is what I got, with construction work its taken a beating so far and not a single scratch on the face. Only damn problem I got is it still somehow get the damn code to unlock (push) 6 different buttons , did have it on swipe your code too same damn thing. Other than that easy to navigate.

DAN!! what can I do to solve this?

I tried everything I could find online. All of those tricks will work for a day or two...then back at it. It sucks to have to download an app to get your phone to work at 95%, but it feels good to know I am not the only one.

Will rooting fix the issue? I have not rooted a phone in a while, but willing to if it will fix the issue.

I like that the active has baro, compass and some other stuff built in, but not worth having to reset every week, that will drive me even more Batshit crazy than I already am...

You can delete or disable a lot of that shit. If you are in oly, hit me up. Dan has seen me root a Samsung galaxy device in five minutes in his office while petting his cat.

Pull the battery for 5 minutes and clear the Google cache

The bug happened with the latest update. It affected a small group of S5's, ALL the Actives and ALL the Alphas. The Swipe utility is the fix until the next update. Samsung and/or the carriers will not warranty because of the "glitch", it's rather annoying. I was working on doing Beer Hounds warranty when the Swipe issue was given to me as they denied his request for warranty.

I personally think it's BS, but it's not the carriers fault, nor is it Samsung's.. It's just the way that Android update was applied. From what I hear, a new update (with patch) should be deployed soon.. How soon? Unknown.

Chris, are you saying that your phone is STILL butt dialing even after applying a homescreen lock?

Can you roll back the update?

This is why I like to root, if for no other reason, I can prevent forced updates, and decide when I want to upgrade.
