This why you carry. Granted, I was hunting at the time. Wasn't cougar hunting, Elk. Luckily rifle wasn't shouldered as she jump on log ten feet of my side, screamed then jumped at me. I had just enough time to squeeze trigger from hip, that's it. Was lucky enough to hit her in neck and drop her without a fight. We are stalked constantly were we Elk and deer hunt, we are stalked occasionally by bear. Stinky and loud just doesn't matter, this encounter was 300 from camp also. 15 or so years ago I was chased well after dark trying to get back to camp. What is was I have no clue, dark but moonlight and snow. I didn't give up and it did Me and the wife camp there in the summer all the time with our hounds. Add on the wolves we saw last year, yotes that likes the taste of dog and it's a predator opportunistic feed fest. Knife will not stop a cat from using its rear claws to open your abdomen, or a bear looking for an easy meal. I respect and fear the outdoors, I don't take chances anymore.

Wow, Glenn . . . I'm glad you had a happy ending to that story. Nice shooting!

You got me thinking about using my shooting belt cross body and a Blade-tech OWB pancake holster for when I hike with a pack.

One thing I was taught by my first fire team leader; carry your knife on your belt, not your gear. There may come a time when you may have to ditch your gear in a hurry, and if you do, you will be left with what you have on your person to survive. Just my $.02.

Very good point .. . . this is why I carry both knife and pistol on my belt, not on my pack.

I don't recall the brand, but an outfit in Anchorage makes a great multi-point shoulder rig. It can be hung vert/horiz. Cross chest or from belt at side 3 d-rings down either side gives a wide variety of heights and angles. That with a Super Redhawk .44mag. I don't go in the woods for much more than a piss w/o it. Semis are okay, but I'll take the .44 any day for any thing.

S&W 629 5" with 300gr bear loads if there's more than a miracle chance of bears or cougars. How do you carry the 629? I have dan wesson stainless .44 mag that I would like to eventually carry when its needed. I found an inexpensive nylon shoulder rig made by Hunter's Joy that I like. Only drawback is no way to carry speedloaders on the holster itself. Works fine under pack straps.

Well, given that two women (a mother and her adult daughter, IIRC) were shot and killed a few years back whilst hiking near Gold Creek, I do tend to worry more about biped predators that I do about the quadruped sort. This thread really has me thinking that I should carry my G26 in my FlashBang holster. The last time I took the boys hiking another hiker (male) followed us on our entire hike, hanging about 20 feet back the entire time. Whatever the deal was with him, Lily didn't like it and kept raising her hackles and growling. Don't know, he could've just been heading the same way we were, but I kept the boys ahead of me and well in sight the entire time. What weirded me out was his greeting, or lack of it--when I turned around and said Hi, he just kin ( .d of stared at me. You didn't stop to "look at something " and stay put for a few minutes so he could pass? ₩-

Depends... usually a Glock 20, sometimes just my normal EDC 1911. Plus usually a J-Frame in the pocket.

depending on if it's a day pack or a ruck, IWB for my g17 and camillus cuda knife in cargo pocket that has an insert for 2 mags or knife and light, knife and mag, left.
if i'm carrying a ruck, molle holster on the hip belt or in a chest rig, rifle is slung or piggybacking my ruck. recently got an okc-3s which will go on my right leg for hikes, on my belt.
infrequently a 22 revolver rides in my lumbar pack (in the case of camping near a fishing site, or discretion) so i have a secondary.

Similar to a what a lot of folks posted... Shield 9mm IWB on the local trails. 3" GP100 either OWB or attached to pack belt if I'm up in the mountains.
