The patent drawing doesn't show measurements. The patent itself describes the barrels as "ordinary rifle-barrels". Issued it had a .58 bore and used standard minie balls. However a 1" canister version was also made.

Actually one could make an argument that Confederate Colonel Mosby's "Greenback Raid" of 1864 should count as a first, and it is possible there are earlier military actions which predate that. However it was also an act of war committed against a military target so may not properly qualify as a train robbery per se.
