Would you believe after 72 hours of hanging outside, the hide still wasn't dry all over?

Well it was just dry enough.

I took the wire wheel to it.

And gave a couple Dawn soapy baths with another scraping in between.

Why do I get the feeling this still isn't enough?

So now it's going to hang for a few days and dry some before I apply the tanning formula.

No chit.

So the wire wheel sorta does dermabrasion on smooth leather?

Hence the angered parents phrase, "I'll tan your hide!"

Yes. But perhaps I should be using a stiffer wheel. Or maybe I'm doing it all right.

Here's the hide before the wire wheel.

Here lies a bear.

Now covered in formula and folded flesh to flesh.

Ups and downs of tanning....
I used over three bottles of formula and I do believe that on the previous two hides, I didn't use enough. This time the hide is much softer and the stretching has been much easier. Partially due to have convenient places of to hook in and hang the hide without making holes. I have a rope, some carabiners and a shackle suspending the hide while I pull on it. Carabiners hook right up in into the sockets for the claws. The shackle is in the lip.

It was also time to pull the head back through so the fur can dry. Well, I found out it was past time. I'll spare you the images. I pulled the head through and lastly got the ears out. Fur came slipping right off of them. Maggots...there were maggots on the ears.

Yogi got hosed hard and a fur bath in Dawn after another bout with maggots in one ear. After a few hours of drying he got stretched again and I took a bundle of sage to burn, smoked up the hide and the fur. I think he's close to being done. What I'm questioning at this point are the dark areas and getting the formula out of the fur.

We've got plenty of greens here for that :)

I'm going to think about that clamp idea.

Got me thinking too...what about tarp clamps?https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A50NB24/ref=asc_df_B00A50NB245134492/?tag=hyprod-20&creative=394997&creativeASIN=B00A50NB24&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198055620944&hvpos=1o4&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11547750629968970245&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9033507&hvtargid=pla-319675817443

I first thought is, "teeth". Teeth create creases. My second thought it, "good size". Because have a small surface is good grabbing obstinate small areas. Perhaps a mixture of clamps would have to do it.
