Re: Solar Eclipse 2017-Where will you be?

In my recliner, watching it on the 4K big screen with a tasty beverage. Feeling sorry for all the poor schmucks fighting traffic and crowds for a glimpse of an event lasting less than 3 minutes.

I was in the totality path of the Feb 1979 eclipse. It got darkish for a couple minutes then back to normal daylight. Cool I guess, then life went on...

Pulled all the gear out. There is a giant sunspot on the sun.

It's a Celestron Ultima 45 degree 100mm 22-66x scope.

Using a t-ring adapter. With my Canon EOS D60 8mpix from 2002. I shot that photo at 22x. At 66x it's pretty dark and dim, even with a longer shutter speed.

It feels really hard to focus looking at the sun through the viewfinder.

Here is one shot at higher zoom:

That looks like a really sweet spotting scope. Nice to see it can do double duty. I've got a 66mm scope and have been thinking about breaking it out to check out the next full moon here.

Interesting what you say about the higher magnification. The eye relief and exit pupil typically get a lot smaller at highest magnifications which might explain why the image is dim at those settings.

Using an 80mm x 60x Konus spotting scope, I made a redneck Solar Eclipse set up.

I have about $20 in my redneck Solar telescope in mods. Home Depot plumbing part with rubber gasket, Solar Filter sheet (Specifically for telescopes) and some gorilla glue. I need to work on the focusing of the cell phone camera (I had it on auto focus, I will do manual focus for the real thing) Laura and I will be at Ground zero in Casper WY on this day. I'll be recording video and doing snap photos simultaneously.

That picture of the sun is really bright. You sure you got it setup all properly?

I may need to modify the full settings on the camera.
But yeah, I got the right filter.

I might add, the glasses we got...makes the sun an orange. Much better, but not magnified.
