I was in the air somewhere between Seattle and Dallas. The pilot banked left and right so everyone could get a chance to blind themselves. It was pretty cool from the sky though to be honest.

We saw the shade slit phenomenon through some firs as well. I guess the theory goes early thinkers figured out what was going on with the moon and sun this way.

mmalleck that is awesome! It's not stupid if it works! I just hope those are on the side you face towards the sun, and not the side you put your eyes up to.

Yes, filters were on the sunny side. :) I modified 2 sets of binoculars this way. But, like you mentioned, just looking via 1x glasses was pretty cool.
I had to drag the family out. They enjoyed it in the end though.

Sorry to hear your DSLR didn't turn out. What happened?
I trusted a website for solar eclipse camera settings instead of falling back on 40 years of shooting photography with of gut instinct. :(
oh man. I learned that with my DSLR hooked to my spotting scope, I needed a really fast shutter to fix the wobble in the scope. So I shot my best photo at 400 ISO, 1/180 sec. I also had to shoot much darker than the camera told me.

The wife and I noticed how the birds stopped chirping for a while and you could hear crickets as if the sun was setting. Definitely noticed a temp drop, and how dark it got in the house but it was a weird dark. It amazed both of us how light it still was with so little of the sun showing. Almost reminded us of being far north in Alaska. I could only imagine what ancient civilizations would have been like when something like this happened.
My wife had a friend up in Canada, and her husband locked everyone in the basement thinking it was going to be the end of the world. Apparently he had been secretly stocking supplies down there. After about 30 min of being down there (and texting friends), she took the kids and went out to enjoy the event. I wonder how many loony cult members are no longer with us?
A cool pick a friend shared to me: The 82nd at Ft Bragg.
