USS John S. McCain DDG 56.............. Useless Ship Senile, Doddering Decrepit Geriatric. The 56 represents the number of years he has been sucking off the government teat. Impressive looking on first look, long past her prime, floating around rudderless, without a purpose, drifting out to sea,
Or maybe Senile John had the conn and was actually steering it.

Yup. Out at sea it's a job for a non designated E1/E2 from deck division. In port it's an E3 to E5 with experience in docking a ship. Captains in the Navy don't pilot ships. My first time out at sea I had the conn watch, on the job training at midnight on how to steer a ship. Captain came to the bridge from his sea cabin, opened the door and yelled "Helmsman, watch your helm!!!" I must have knocked him out of his rack with my bad driving. Hahahahaha No worries. The Boatswains Mate of the Watch is always nearby, and he's one of the few guys trusted to actually steer the ship to the pier without hitting anything. I didn't know you could operate one of those with a learner's permit. Doesn't there have to be a licensed operator over 21 on the vessel? FMTT this is nuts.

Or maybe Senile John had the conn and was actually steering it. You do realize that the USS McCain isn't named after Senator John McCain III, right? The ship's namesake are his father and grandfather, both of whom were admirals who served with distinction in World War II, and were the first father/son pair to achieve flag rank.

Maybe while they are repairing it they can install 5 ft foam fenders all around it and rename it the USS Nerf. If our ships can't handle congested areas, maybe they should avoid them.
It sure is sad that more sailors probably lost their lives....again.

Soldier_Citizen wrote: mcyclonegt wrote: Who the fuck is driving these things? Generally... 19-20 year old kids. Maybe that's why ships keep running into shit...Twelve years submarines here. When the vessel was underway in port waters, the captain was always on the bridge. A junior officer may have been giving commands, but the captain was there. If we were heading out to sea, the captain would lay below after we cleared 1SD. Coming in, the captain was on the bridge just about the time we hit the channel, and remained on the bridge until we had two lines over. At sea, there was always an officer in the conn or on the bridge. Sure, the helmsman is actually "steering" the vessel, but other than minute rudder input to stay on heading, there was no significant change in rudder position without a direct command from the officer of the deck.
