Re: Is There A Bowyer and Fletcher In The House?

I made a recurve bow in 9th grade woodshop. Used it a lot growing up, still have it hanging on the wall. Wouldn't use it anymore though.
If I can make a bow in 9th grade over half a year of screwing off and making blow darts on the lathe, you can make one in a couple of weeks. Well, your work schedule, 72 hours!

Just thinking of building the form seems like a job of discovery. A piece of 1" or more plywood and 1" dowels at different locations set into the board, spaced to make the shape but, also shaped wide enough to accommodate the pieces that are to be glued together.
Hmmmm.

Hmmmm.

Parents bought me the kit which had the template to cut the angles out of 2x6 etc for forms and instructions for where how and how many clamps..
Gluing, clamping etc was a breeze, it was the filing/shaping/sanding that was a full on bitch.
Until I'm old and to the point of sheer boredom whittling wood on my porch, if I get back into it I'll buy one with no assembly required!
Also made my own bow strings, and still have some of the stuff for that floating around somewhere. Never really made my own arrows, but did make arrow points in metal shop in 11th grade.

I'm now at the point of dreaming about making a bow. As if I need one more project right now.

I've looked at http://www.3riversarchery.com/ a bit and they have components.

Somehow I'm not surprised.

I'm starting to worry about him, he needs to start sleeping and not work on projects 24 hours a day at some point!
Besides, he's getting too many man crushes going on!
I will admit to having spent too much time on things that should have been lower on my list of priorities.

Archery can be practiced in the back yard all year long and I'd like to get a multi season tag or two next year. I've been told I need to start practicing now if I want to be ready in a couple years for hunting with a reflex bow. So if I'm going to make my own, I better start collecting materials or get a reality check and buy something.

Yeah I love that about archery, I shoot in my yard all the time. Good luck on MS elk tag, takes 3+points to draw them these days at least.

Never looked into reflex, but I know traditional archery gear there is a significant learning curve and practice before you are ready to hit the woods. Even modern bow take a good bit of practice, start now with modern bow and you be dialed well before next season though. and look used market, no sense taking the $ drop to buy new. Get measured and then keep eye open for used ones. Then take into shop and have it tuned/set for you.

I have considered pickup a longbow or recurve just for something to tinker with. Hunting I will stick with my compound though.

Yes, I have a heat gun. It's great for heating up 1911 slides to drift the sights out of. :peep:

Seriously though. I didn't realize that guy was around here. I watched a couple videos about making a box with pvc. icon_eek Seems cool but, I'd like a more legit bow. I'll see what else he's got.

Perhaps I got tainted, or I got trued, from the onset of this. Months ago I asked an archer what compound bow she used. She snapped me a look and said, "I don't use training wheels." icon_eek

HAHA That is awesome and more power to you if you go that route. If it is where you want to go go for it! I just know for me even getting time to stay proficient with compound is a challenge lately. I am just finally getting BH dialed in on new bow now and I leave next Friday for hunt. :shocked4:

I stopped at a archery shop today. The guy asked what what he could do for me and I told him I was interested in hunting next year with a "reflex" bow. Yes, I said that. And I asked what could he tell about them as I'm working on figuring out what's what. He asked me "what do you want to know?"

While we were in Cabelas today I didn't see Chuck...again.

We browsed the archery gear and a guy named Jeffery helped us out with letting me pull on a 50# recurve. No shooting though. Still it was nice to have some customer service and talk, and even got some info on where there's some big deer near where we plan to go for opening on general. The 50# wasn't a hard draw and the price tag was about $350, which doesn't seem unreasonable but, there's some a couple other I've come across.

I'm still at the stage of, "What am I looking at?" How do I tell crap from OK, to awesome? For instance, the Samick has options for the arrow rest. What do any of them mean?

She really is the best. As the YL is putting away laundry she says, "What's next for you and archery? Are you going to take a class? I found one in Puyallup for $5 every Thursday." http://www.skookumarchery.com/homepage/ ... roduction/

Well don't that just beat all.
