I can tell you from my 25 years in the biz that starting with a lower weight recurve will help you develop better habits and correct form. Archery is very much a "muscle memory" sport. Repetitive, correct, practice will carry over to a stronger bow later. To start out with too much draw weight will lead to bad habits. A longer recurve will "stack" less during the draw, especially if your drawing over 28 inches. I would recommend a 40 pound bow to start, develop proper habits, then transition to 50ish pounds for hunting. Remember that most recurve poundage is measured at 28 inches. Expect 3-5 pounds per inch past that for longer draws.
Stance, grip, anchor, release, and follow through, are the form basics to focus on as a beginner.

Good to know. Thank you.

So...dogfish had a compound bow to loan me. So why not...I never shot one before. I'll tell you what, that was different. Sights, a hand release...oh I know now you're not supposed to practice with broadheads. Ooops. I managed to break a couple arrows and get a head stuck in the board behind the target.

I marked off the back yard in five yard increments. Here's my best group at 15yds.

Dafuq? First response in this entire thread and somehow I've overlooked it for weeks. This thread might be worth some money when OhShoot dies of malnutrition next week. No seriously hippy, I enjoy your commentary. Maybe try having a carb tomorrow and see how your body responds. Half the time when I see you I'm afraid the wind is going to gust over 15mph and just take you away. And hey, if you haven't died or blown away by October 31st could you come stand in my yard and scare the kiddies? I'm fresh out of skeletons.

In full Predator fashion the Dread-I needs to make these instead of buying?

Somehow I'm not surprised.

I'm starting to worry about him, he needs to start sleeping and not work on projects 24 hours a day at some point!
Besides, he's getting too many man crushes going on!
I will admit to having spent too much time on things that should have been lower on my list of priorities.

Archery can be practiced in the back yard all year long and I'd like to get a multi season tag or two next year. I've been told I need to start practicing now if I want to be ready in a couple years for hunting with a reflex bow. So if I'm going to make my own, I better start collecting materials or get a reality check and buy something.

I have my dads old recurve. Have a mid early-mid 90s compound(slow and heavy nowadays), amd enjoy shooting the recurve the most. I should probably be more proficient with it. Something about snap shooting by feel makes you feel like the Last Mohican.

Ah yes, the last of the redneckans. I picture you running along a high mountain path with a tomahawk held high chasing some asshole who's trying to run off with your last keystone.
