Cook Aquaculture and Your Representatives

Sat Aug 26, 2017 6:39 am

In conversation (email) with a certain State representative earlier, when Cook Aquaculture (CA hereafter) was applying for their permits for their marine aquaculture operations, I pointed the fresh-faced legislator to the leading defenders and actors in the work to protect native salmon runs and discussed the ability for CA to produce the same product, albeit with increased cost, without the risks of escapement, pollution and biohazard were they to run their operation as land-based (tanks, obviously)

In the wake of the recent escapement, which has DNR, the tribes, and the aforementioned Native run proponents scrambling to mediate the damage, I renewed my contact with the freshman legislator who assured, me that while he was (ahem):

"... shocked when I read the news report. I didn't even know we had non-native fisheries in our waters because I don't have a background in this subject " (emphasis, mine) and that he was working to correct the issue, perhaps by allowing the permits to expire and not allow renewal...

I was also assured that the commissioner of Public Lands is "on top of the current critical situation".... would have been nice for them to be so at the onset before the permits had been issued, but I digress...

Let's see what actions these legislators and administrators take to preserve the native runs

sorry, I omitted the emphasis color (red). I was pointing out that A) legislators either forget or are duplicitous and B) there is a problem with permitting marine aquaculture due to the endangerment of native runs from pollution run-off of excess feed and animal waste, bio-hazard from animal waste and infection, and escapement (which endangers the native runs as the non-native fish compete for resources and prey on young native salmon.)

The Democratic State Senator with whom I have been in contact has been providing updates on Olympias activities surrounding this.

Apparently he and "several other Democratic Senators" are working on a bill to outlaw these marine fish farms.

The Cliff's Notes version:

Don't worry, brah, we got this.

Oops a disaster happened. Well we should make these things illegal so it doesn't happen again.

Sounds like you put the effort in and were given the "Thanks, we know what we are doing" reply.

Sounds like a prime opportunity to submit an FOIA request, or supply copies of your correspondence to the news. "Democrats KNEW, but did NOTHING".. Catchy headline.
