LinkNice, but is it sustainable? Will they lose their market of snobs who think paying extreme prices for food makes them special?

They're just trying to steal customers away from the competition. The prices will come up again once they succeed in doing that.

I'm just bummed they're shrinking their meat counter offerings.

You are right. They are just driving out all competition so you are forced to get everything from the Buy-N-Large Corporation. Standard Oil guys were rookies compared to Amazon and no one is doing a thing about it. I stopped buying through Amazon when possible after they adopted the EBAY model. You do not know what condition the products you get from their "sellers" is going to be. We have returned a good 40% of the stuff we purchased.

Why? Everything I've bought has come to me fine, and I order quiet a bit.

You have had a very different experience than me.

We still do our shopping in Kent and Renton every week. Yes, we actually drive from Mercer Island to Winco, Carpenito Brothers and Sam's Club (for gas) and our weekly grocery bill is $50 or less.
We've been into Whole Paycheck and New Seasons to price compare what our weekly bill would be and it would've been over $200.

I do not order that much. I have had a rash of items that are obviously used and / or are a returned item that has been roughed up. I never buy used items. It always seems to be items that are not from the Amazon warehouse.

Exactly.
Used to be you could shop for good deals on Amazon, but if you ventured into buying the "what other people who looked at (x) also bought" you would get hosed for the add-ons.
Now my perception is that everything has a higher margin than previously.

So what you're telling me is the prices at Whole Foods are now normal...

A lot of times I bought something and afterwards was offered the 'what other people bought' for a lower price.
I dunno, Amazon Prime does well for me.
Most of the time it's some computer shit for a client and I can get it delivered the same or next day for free.
But ya, Amazon doesn't mind losing money to take over market share.
Don't think they made a profit until after 2009.

** warning: this is my personal opinion and actually a joke. It doesn't reflect the opinion of my employer (Amazon) **
First day after acquicition:
Bezos: So, what's our profit margin?
Director: 80%
Bezos: oh, then we can reduce around 70% pricing and still make profits
Director: Make it 43% and you will recover your investment within 5 years.
Bezos: Deal

Yup. The Redmond location removed about 1/3 of their meat counter and replaced it with pre-packaged stuff. You can't get chicken breasts individually anymore. Can only get packaged ones.
Last summer they had these amazing chorizo stuffed Hatch chilis in the meat counter. My brother in law asked if they were going to have them again now that Hatch chilis are back in season and they told him that a new corporate directive was to make sure all stores are the same and to disallow fun custom things like that.
It's a real bummer because, like you, I mainly go for the meat counter.
