The destruction in Texas and Florida re ordered the priority list and getting more emergency food in the household was one of those items. A concern of mine is building a stash of food and then it sits, forever, until finally needed and by then some of it has gone bad. Also the hassle of restocking everything and keeping it up to date would be a time suck.

Then I thought: why not use amazon pantry to send me a new box each year? I could create a list with dry goods that will keep a year and then after the year with no disaster, open the box and eat the food, and then order another. This keeps the food constantly restocked and easy to manage.

So far my list of food items is rather thin however. Any suggestions? Here's what I have so far:

Pasta
Oatmeal
Dried honey roasted peanuts
Soups, higher calorie

Any other suggestions? Items need to be able to keep for at least a year and be easy to prepare, or at worst eaten straight out of the container

Canned goods have a way longer shelf life than one year and are often good well past that if stored properly.

Store food that you like to eat. Just because it may keep you alive, why eat food that make you not care if you live? My emergency
food is stuff I eat all the time, so I don't have to stress to much about rotation.
Store what you eat......Eat what you store. Don't forget water.

I'll just break into my Mormon neighbors basement. They have enough food down there to last ten years.

We prepared a boxed meal of some kinda rice dish that expired in 2011 a few months ago.

Ive still been using up bottles of ketchup left over formmy wedding 5 years ago.

You came equipped with a bad food indicator (your fuckin NOSE). If it stinks, dont eat it.

Most of us are fat enough to go without food for 6 months anyways.

yes but in situations where speed is required I can grab a cardboard box and be sure I can feed the family for a few days. If I have a few minutes I can grab several bags and empty the pantry. One thing I discovered is in high stress situations you become stupid and have blinders on. The simpler you can make it the better. Plus it really won't 'cost' me much as the plan is this is what we already eat.

Wednesday is "family home evening". So it can't be on Wednesday.

And on thursday the Bishop wants to speak to me about my masturbation. So that day is out too.

I haven't had good luck with nuts. The oils go rancid unless the oxygen absorber is doing a really good job. Oils don't last long at all, even olive oil in the freezer doesn't stay good forever.

Most of our stuff is freeze dried or canned meats, cheese, and butter. Amazon definitely does not have the best pricing on any of that stuff. It's very boutique.
