A statue to Francis Scott Key, the writer of the Star Spangled Banner, was defaced overnight in downtown Baltimore, with someone painting “Racist Anthem” on the side of the Bolton Hill monument.

Baltimore Police received a report of the vandalism at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. They are investigating, but have no suspects.

I'm just curious how many people here are actually familiar with the complete lyrics to the "Star spangled banner" ? The song is much longer than the version we all know and love. Here are the complete lyrics

Quote:
Complete version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" showing spelling and punctuation
from Francis Scott Key's manuscript in the Maryland Historical Society collection.

O say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bomb bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream,
'Tis the star-spangled banner - O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation!
Blest with vict'ry and peace may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto - "In God is our trust,"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

I highlighted the lyrics that might be in question as to what some people probably think are racist.

thanks db_elwood,
Good to be reminded. Just goes to show you the lack of education these days.

I already knew the full lyrics to the song. I don't think it's really relevant.
Why you would say something stupid like "I suppose you will sit for the anthem now" is beyond me.

You are obviously offended by the entire set of lyrics. You shpould also read the article about the composer. He actually fought for slave rights

You obviously don't know what you're talking about. I'm not offended, nor will I sit. Your point about the third stanza is not relevant, just accept it.

In a country run by the majority but micro-controlled by the minority. If it is relevant to one person? Then yes...its relevant.

People need to try and let things go....for God sake we cant be worried about saying shit in a room with two people in it now without getting in trouble for hurting some freaking feeling.

I agree with LOG...

Bet you're not surprised

But think of it this way....are the people that have nothing to do going to dissect every stinking thing ever said, sung or written then either protest or deface a monument that may or may not have anything directly to do with what they perceive has hurt their feelings?

Shits gotta stop.

That was written at at time when that was accepted verbiage....so two hundred some odd years later some twat has to deface a monument.

Disgusting.....

How many Indians are truly pissed about the Cleveland Mascot.

When are these idiots going to start dissecting Macbeth, Othello, Hamlet and defacing Shakespearean statues..................................?

I actually knew about this since back in high school when one kid refused to take part in it during a football game. I would be that the chances are good that whoever did this to the statue didnt even know it said that.

just because he hasn't heard it sung doesn't mean it is never sung. You know me best, do you think i'm offended? or that I would sit?
His feels are too hurt to look at it objectively IMO
