Cherry picking NRA's statement, I see how some of you all are getting upset. I don't see it that way at all. I see a different message.

You all need to reread that statement in full.

Why don't you go ahead and link to it, and quote out why you think everybody is cherry picking? You've called everybody an idiot, without providing any evidence.

He didn't call anyone an idiot. Un-bunch your panty drawers. Why would you ask him to link and quote when he specifically stated that he came to a different conclusion after reviewing the statement as a whole, and suggested others do the same. You read like a liberal.

I own a bump-fire stock for an AR. I consider it a toy and a conversation piece, nothing more. For serious range work, or hunting, or self-defense I would never use it. It's a shits-and-grins ammo-waster, and if the ATF had never approved them then my life wouldn't be any worse. Realistically, if they go away then I won't really care much.

That said . . . this news about the NRA really pisses me off, for a couple of reasons:

1) We know that anti-gunners have a knee-jerk reaction after every mass shooting. Do we really want to feed the habit? So this douchebag used a bump-fire stock, let's ban that. The next douchebag used an AK, let's ban that. The next one used a semi-auto mag-fed shotgun, let's ban that. We need to STOP that cycle of thinking, not feed it.

2) What do we hate about the ATF? When the make their own fucking rules up. What's the NRA now asking them to do? Make their own fucking rules up. The ATF has already determined that bump-fire stocks comply with the law, and are legal. What now, the NRA wants them to make shit up, and say they don't comply with the law? If that's REALLY what someone wants, then you get Congress to change the law. You don't "legislate from the ATF chair."

Assholes. Assholes everywhere.

The NRA gave up. No way around it.

I keep hearing people say that we had to throw the public a bone, that the public demanded that something be done, so the NRA suggests falling on our swords and giving up the chintzy pieces of plastic known as bump stocks.

The truth is that the public's outrage would have lasted about a week or two before the so called bump stock disappeared from their collective memory, as the next shiny thing or ridiculous controversy became the new headline..

NRA didn't even try to drag this fight out, they flipped over and showed their belly at the first threat, with seemingly no reason. More than that, they put their stamp of approval on the idea that more regulations are needed.

The NRA opened the door to the anti gunners to once again, they smell blood and their demands have expanded now that the NRA suggested a device should be regulated. I've noticed that a lot of the old AWB talking points have been pulled out again, like stating that flash hiders helped conceal the shooter, or that collapsible stocks helped him sneak more firearms into his room. Even have heard some media outlets come to the realization that "hey wait a minute, if he didn't have a bump stock and had just fired semi auto, he could have been MORE deadly - should semi auto really be legal all?"

"Stand and fight" became "bend over" yesterday and a ton of NRA members are not happy. They are going to lose a lot of members over this.

^^ agreed^^ and all the more reason to send letters, emails and phone calls to your senators and representatives telling them to resist implementing redundant and knee-jerk reactive legislation to address the action of a mad-man or criminal.

One argument I've been seeing online in the defense of the NRA is that this is a strategic ploy.

Apparently (no idea if this is true or not) if the ATF is ruling on something, then Congress can't. So the NRA is asking the ATF to review the bump-fire stock so Congress can't get involved.

Don't shoot the messenger.

I was hoping that someone else would post different conclusions.... But no one did, so I'll paraphrase what I think NRA said, and put my flame suit on. NRA's statement was written in political speak. Here's is my plain language interpretation of it:

Message to Congress:

1. Hands off the Slide-fires. Let the BATFE do its job. It is NOT your job to interfere with regulations. Only policy. (usually)

2. DO YOUR JOB on the National Right-to-Carry reciprocity, and pass it. The people wants this. Get it done.

All the rest of it was a bunch of gobbly-gook platitudes to make the politicians feel better about getting bawled out.

That's a good take on their statement. One hopes it is received in that manner.

Thanks Danoh. I'm going to go ahead and post the actual NRA statement here:

https://home.nra.org/joint-statement/
Emphasis Mine:
NRA wrote:
"In the aftermath of the evil and senseless attack in Las Vegas, the American people are looking for answers as to how future tragedies can be prevented. Unfortunately, the first response from some politicians has been to call for more gun control. Banning guns from law-abiding Americans based on the criminal act of a madman will do nothing to prevent future attacks. This is a fact that has been proven time and again in countries across the world. In Las Vegas, reports indicate that certain devices were used to modify the firearms involved. Despite the fact that the Obama administration approved the sale of bump fire stocks on at least two occasions, the National Rifle Association is calling on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) to immediately review whether these devices comply with federal law. The NRA believes that devices designed to allow semi-automatic rifles to function like fully-automatic rifles should be subject to additional regulations. In an increasingly dangerous world, the NRA remains focused on our mission: strengthening Americans' Second Amendment freedom to defend themselves, their families and their communities. To that end, on behalf of our five million members across the country, we urge Congress to pass National Right-to-Carry reciprocity, which will allow law-abiding Americans to defend themselves and their families from acts of violence."

They are clearly calling for regulation of devices that allow semi-automatic rifles to "function like" fully automatic rifles.

If that was their real message, they did a fantastic job of shrouding it. I tend to read it more literally, and clearly many others do as well. Whether the NRA meant what they said or meant something else is a moot point if they piss off a whole bunch of their members, which I believe they have.

If you are correct that the NRA employed political speak here rather than a genuine message, then that bothers me almost as much as the words they used. I want people to mean what they say, and say what they mean. None of this political doublespeak and gamesmanship. Know what you believe, state it in no uncertain terms, and stand behind it with conviction. Doing anything less calls into question your trustworthiness.

That's the problem with political speak - best to speak plainly.

BATFE already reviewed these devices. End of statement.

I prefer federal agencies to follow their mandates instead of yielding to transient whim of the day.

That statement I'm including as part of their "double-speak". NRA is doing this to partly say..... "Hey, I'm on your side too."

I agree with both of you. During my lifetime, I have interacted with TV reporters looking for a "sound bite". They get one, and it gets all twisted around. I have also had to deal with Politicians in my line of work. Same thing there. They cherry pick what they want to hear, and again twist it all around to (almost) completely the opposite of what I said...

I'd love me some plain speak. But it's not happening. Time will tell.

The NRA basically suggested that the ATF review the classification of the bumpfire stocks, which means that ATF will probably reclassify them as machine guns similar to lightning links and DIAS, etc. The ATF can do that any way because it's their job, but the NRA opened their fat mouths and gave the ATF their blessing to do so, and gave the anti-gun media the bonus of having an NRA stamp of approval on a new firearms regulation.

Meanwhile because the NRA didn't ask for anything that requires a bill be passed, we get nothing in return. If the NRA was smart they would have said something like "we will fight the reclassification of these stocks tooth and nail UNLESS congress brings SHARE act to the floor in good faith" but they didn't do that, did they. Do you know why? Because the NRA is apparently very, very retarded.

I have my own opinions on national reciprocity, which is a double edged sword. If we get it, I fully expect it to come with ridiculous training & safekeeping requirements attached to it, and likely will force many states into a a may-issue category. There is just no way that the pols would give us reciprocity without also making CC licenses hard as hell to get and keep.
