It's Jennifer. And I was referencing the "of course he's a Muslim" narrative running through the thread. The one that dismisses all other possibilities--psychotic break, acting under the influence, et al.--right out of hand as soon as the shooter's name was announced.

The "Middle Eastern name=Muslim=terrorist" currently omnipresent on this board caused my to mention my Chechen theory. Chechens do not generally have readily identifiable Muslim names, and the idea that a name and inferred presumption of the bad actor's motives based solely on that information is patently ridiculous.

Hmm...it's not as if there haven't been GAZILLIONS of examples of Muslim terrorists attacks, GLOBALLY, in the past decade or ten that would make a rational person consider that there is a substantial probability that the attack by a person with an Arabic sounding name would be religio-politically motivated (I'm of Arabic descent, so you can Sh!t can some of the "He's a red-neck, racist" bewlshite).

Reminds me of the story of an Ornithologist who traveled to a remote tropical isle looking for the Foo bird. He and two colleagues were about to enter the cave where the bird nested. THe Ornithologist turned to his assistants and reminded them that the Foo bird's excrement has an odd toxin in it, and if a person were to come in contact with it, they should NOT remove the droppings as instant death would be certain to follow; they would have to wear it for the rest of their days.

They entered the cave and unfortunately startled the bird... which began to fly about the cave over their heads, in such a state that it was squawking and shitting in panic. Of course, all of the members of the exploration team were covered in Foo bird droppings...

One of the two assistants, quite panicked himself, ran screaming from the cave, furiously wiping at the poo with which he was covered... only a few steps beyond the entrance to the cave, he succumbed to the toxin and dropped dead.

The other assistant and the Ornithologist took careful note that the reports of the fatal effects of the Foo bird droppings were true, set grim faces, continued their survey and returned to the ship covered in poo.

For weeks, as the ship plied the vast briney, they stoically wore the excrement but this began to wear on the remaining assistant, and just shy of their destination at home port, he could stand it no longer. Betting on the passage of time to weaken the effects of the toxin, he began to scrub off the detritus in preparation for his reunification with family... but only moments after beginning to clean up he, too, dropped dead from the poisonous offal.

The Ornithologist continued on for many many years wearing the offensive badges earned of his experiences on that distant island, but late in life, decades after his excursion and having lived a full life, decided that he would finally chance removing the bird crap.

He, in cautious preparation for what might be his final act, bade his wife goodbye and wiped his head clean... only to drop dead on the spot!

And what have we learned from this long and sad tale?

You all seem to forget about the "Christians" calling for the murder of women's care providers, the "Christians" who want to...yup, murder or starve or leave to die anyone not a "Christian". The Muslims I know and work with are not the Muslims conjured in your Fox-news watching nightmares. The Muslim volunteer I partner with on occasion to talk with women in Bellevue's large Muslim community is a kind and graceful man who fled the terror of ISIS three years ago (ISIS kills by far more Muslims than members of any other religion). He lost his wife but his two children, both darling little girls, survived.

Yes, I wear a headscarf--loose, diaphanous instead of opaque, and tucked Turkish-style--when I speak with these women about community policing and C.E.R.T. and the services offered by Bellevue to crime and disaster victims, but this is a sign of respect. I'm in your house, I follow your rules. No one asked me to do it, and certainly, no one told me to do it.

So yes, I do get a bit cross when someone with a Muslim or Middle Eastern or even African sounding name does something like this, and the whole board--along with a whole other segment of society--rushes to scream "Terrorism!".

Wow. And in this instance... it was terrorism.
