Just a heads up for any of those looking to possibly find a new career path or just a way to make some extra income. The Port of Tacoma ILWU is having lottery spots open through 8/9 so put your name in!

I got my name pulled for the Seattle Port in February and have been getting about 24+ hours of work a week making $48 per hour on weekends/nights or $31.40 on days to start.

After 50 hours of work you get a $200 Red Wing voucher each year for new boots
Killer medical-Dental-Pension if you get on full time
Work is either at 6am or 6pm daily so its pretty flexible

Can one work strictly weekends, or is it a mandatory report daily?

I'm still active duty so my time is somewhat limited.

I work 50 hours a week at my main gig and only go down Fri-Sat-Sun as of now as an Un-ID Casual. Once you get enough hours worked (been around 400+) and you become and ID Casual its best to show up as much as you can so you dont get passed by.

Well, I submitted my application online. So I guess I will see how it goes against the other possible 25K that did the same thing.

Hey man I thought the same thing, and my number was 331. There was almost a 60% drop out rate in my training classses

Wow. That is a very high percentage. Was the training started before or after the urinalysis was given?

Its not the UA process that thins the herd, it's more the short notice for trainings that was a PITA. There were a few times where they had training set on a Friday, then during class they said we needed to be back the following Tuesday with little or no notice. I saved up vacation knowing that training would need to be done, so I was able to work around it. Its a MAJOR pain, but in the end if you can work around it, you can't go wrong.

I will say that after talking with several A, B, and foreman down there you can make a TON of money once you become permanent. I worked with three A guys on Saturday who were all making north of $100 per hour for a 9 hour shift. It's not uncommon during the summer for them to pull over $3800 per week after taxes.

Thatbis my main concern, the short notice for the required training. I have the vacation days in the "bank" but bein able to access them in a timely manner is another thing.
I don't get to call in sick, vacation ot leave days have to be applied for and it usually takes over a week. It is a little ridiculous. There are such things as emergency leave, but that would usually involve a sick or dying/dead family member.

Why can't the Port schedule training in an orderly type fashion?

I wish I didn’t live so darn far away. Even if I got drawn the idea of that commute isn’t worth it anymore. It’s good to hear an actual first hand story of a person getting drawn and not “knowing someone”.
