Seems that so many folks, day to day, are just plain pricks.
Example. Today, I'm running a out-and-back quick errand and I see a florescent tape measure squarely in the center of my lane, on a lightly traveled two-lane road. Value is probably a dollar, no big deal, but it's handy to have a few extras around. I figure if it's there when I return in about 5 minutes, I'll just stop and grab it, and that someone would have to purposefully hit it given the position in the direct center of the lane.
Sure enough, not 5 minutes later, someone obviously purposefully hit it. Why? WTF are people such jackwagons in life? No big deal on the tape measure, but reminded me of other experiences.
I've seen this with anything in the road in my life. Animals, turtles, you name it. About 5 years ago, on a low speed side road, I saw a stray dog wandering on the shoulder. Speed limit is 35mph. I couldn't stop on the way out, but figured when I returned shortly, I'd stop and save the dog. Sure enough, some jackwagon MUST have purposefully sped up and hit it and killed it. There's no other explanation since it was on the shoulder, dead, and at a low speed it would have been easy to avoid in the road. I've seen people clearly and deliberately hit creatures in the road and it's just upsetting that folks behave this way.
People just really infuriate me with their selfish deliberative jerkish behavior sometimes.
What is the mental defect in people to cause this issue I have often wondered.

I’m not disagreeing with your conclusion about people , but I think you’re stretching logic a bit with the “they just have deliberately hit it,” with either situation.

Yeah +1 to what Steve said.
Frankly it surprised me to see that as a lawyer you just drew conclusions above without any witness or hard based evidence. Weird shit happens and often I wouldn't have believed it unless I had seen it. Maybe you're just having a bad day.

About 20 yrs ago, I pulled over on a rural highway at home in Tennessee, to grab a manhole sized snapping turtle that was in the middle of the lane, and headed the wrong direction. At that size, he might have easily been 30+ years old. As I’m standing there opposite him, waiting for traffic, (at least 2-3 cars went by) and along came a jacked up F250. I MADE eye contact with that mother fucker, and with a stupid grin, he swerved to hit that turtle. I tried to chase him down, but my 84’ Toyota wasn’t up to the challenge.
LC may be jumping to a conclusion here, but it does happen, and it is a disgusting side of humanity. Some people are assholes sometimes, and some people are just plain rotten at the core.

So as many of you guys know Im a Commercial Driver and over the course of 20 years I have seen just about everything “driver-related” my biggest fucking pet peeve is when someone is on the side of the road, ANY ROAD why is it not common sense to switch lanes or move over to the oncoming lane (if it is safe) to move over for the person/s on the side of the road?
It happened to me again yesterday I blew a drive tire and I quickly got to the shoulder and sure as shit while I was waiting for LS about 80% of the vehicles still stayed in the right lane, good god people use your fucking heads, the biggest salt in that wound is when other Commercial Drivers dont get over, at one point in time as a Driver your gonna be on the side of that road with Cars whizzing by at 70+ MPH.
As far as trying to hit something in the road on purpose, my buddy many years ago tried to take out a Raccoon in the road and we ended up in the fucking ditch at 0100 waiting for a tow truck. I dont think to this day I have ever been that scared!!
So I say if someone is gonna be a jerkoff and try to play “Mad Max” with a tape measure and end up getting a free ziplock bag, I say fuck them!!!!

One of my worst childhood memories was seeing a giant turtle purposefully hit by a trucker. I was about 10 and my mom and I were on vacation. We saw the turtle and stopped so I could move it. Semi comes along and hits it squarely right in front of me. I was so heartbroken and angry and it ruined our vacation. I still get angry today over that.
I can pretty much put my wheels where I want, and observe EVERYTHING larger than a coffee cup in my lane. If you can't see or avoid a stationary object in the middle of the road, you have no business driving.
Sure, weird stuff happens. But hitting a 2"x2" stationary tape measure in the direct center of the lane in a 5 minute window could really only happen on purpose. Left there for a week, then sure randomly it likely gets hit. But in 5 minutes, I doubt it.

Yup, agreed on the "move over and/or slow down" advice. I run and ride my bike with my leashed dogs on side roads. Probably 50% of people don't move a ****** foot over or slow off the gas. It's startling, and the SENSELESS margin of missing is inches. And it's senseless b/c they have an entire open lane in which they can at least swerve into for 30'.
I really don't think the average person has a clue, and just goes thru life in their own bubble of selfish behavior.

Don't get me started on people that don't move over for emergency vehicles....
Every time I was on scene I thought 'no way someone could top what happened last time'. but nope, someone always managed to find a way....from people trying to cut THROUGH accident scenes to try and get over to a different lane...to a mustang doing a burnout at an ACTIVE accident scene on the Oil-Dry we just put down..
Even out here, in my M1031 (Maintenance truck), I got lights you can see from a mile away (quite literally), I'll be blocking a lane.. (stalled vehicle, an accident, whatever), and people will fly right up then force their way over into the next lane....

Probably the same type of person that mutilates 7 cats.
On my way out to OK I was usually driving a little slower than the speed limit since I was pulling a trailer. When the big rigs passed me I would flash my lights to let them know they were clear to move back over, I could tell they appreciated it because they would turn their lights on/off a couple of times. If any vehicle was on the side of the highway I would move over a lane in case the diver stepped out suddenly. Courtesy on the road goes a long way.

So the other day I'm driving to work down 38th Street. there's a little bit of traffic there's not a whole lot at just under 7 in the morning heading west. In front of me is a guy in a black late model Cherokee just driving like a complete doofus. trying to get around people tailgating all the normal stuff. As we approached The Interchange where it goes on to I5 or down to the mall and all that stuff he gets in the far left lane like he's going to turn but instead punches it just so he can get in front of everybody headed down 38th Street. Well I'm just driving the speed limit and doing whatever thinking about how much of a douche this guy is and I pulled up right next to him at the light where I make my right turn to go to work. so I'm stopped at the light next to him and I look over cuz I could just kind of wanted to see if he looked like as much of an asshole as he drove like. He's got his passenger side window down and literally like the second I pull up he looks over at me and I'm just looking at him like disapproving I guess, I don't really hide much with my facial expressions. So he very loudly says "you got a problem?" All kind of things went through my mind. I just chuckled and continued on my way. But to me this is one of those things that you are apparently thinking you're in such a hurry that you have to drive like a complete fucking asshole, just to end up in the same exact spot as the people who are just driving normally.
