Looking for the value of a very old burley oak tree, before it's cut down.

Before it can have any value, you need to have a buyer. Probably limited to the hobby wood/milling market.

If you take an oak tree down and have any limbs left over, I'd be interested. I'm looking for relatively straight 3' - 5' lengths, 4" - 6" in diameter. I'm going to drill holes in them and plant Shitake mushroom plugs in them. Depending on price, I could pay for them or pay you back with mushrooms (once they start fruiting).

Real value cannot be established until it is a log on the ground. If it has gun barreled from rot, worth less.
If it is sound as a dollar stump to crown, worth more. Burl size matters to set value as well.
The crown makes for great firewood if seasoned for at least a couple of years before burning.

Dig out the roots and check for truffles as well. Might also be interested in a few limbs(not huge ones) for mushroom growing.
