They were used as recently as the Gulf Wars and perhaps still in use by Iran. Who knows, perhaps it's possible one was cut loose and actually drifted all these years across the pacific. Also, I grew up near where it was found. During WWII, all kinds of protective actions were taken to prevent enemy access to he Naval Shipyard in Bremerton. Among them was an anti-submarine net between the Manchester area and Bainbridge island. The Seattle/Bremerton ferry used to have to stop while the net tenders opened a passage for them. Who knows, maybe this passage was mined as well to keep anyone from sneaking in through Agate Pass. Just south of where the mine was found there was a Degaussing station where ships leaving the Shipyard after repairs were wrapped with cables and "Demagnetized" so they wouldn't set off magnetic mines. Lots of old shit still being found from WWII era.

That’s uhmmm...pretty dull reading when you put it that way. But wait, it’s just now threatening everybody. Not one case of a single loss of life in the 70 years since they started the practice...but let’s all start worrying now.

Co worker spotted this and reported it to the coasties. I found the same one a couple years back when it got loose from Keyport. Tried to tell the EOD boys and the sheriff that this was a trainer and they just kept pointing me to the PIO so i said fuck it and let them keep acting silly
