Buying a used National Security Magnum safe and am preparing to pick it up and move it this weekend. I sought out a model with external hinges after reading a couple threads here where people talked about being able to remove the door to make it easier to move. I looked at an owner's manual online and they say "the door should never be removed" but they don't explain why.
Anyone have any insight here? Is the manufacturer just covering themselves for some sort of liability I can't seem to imagine? Or is there a legit / structural reason why this particular safe door can't be removed?

I'll probably be calling NW Safe tomorrow, but figured I'd try to figure it out here first since I'm not buying it from them.
Thanks! :patriot:

This is great advice...

In fact, instead of calling, I would stop by...

You can get a free education on safes, and may even find a better option.

And if not, you'll leave with a quote on moving that safe, and ideas of what you may want in th future.

It's a win-win :thumbsup2:

Good luck!

Let us know what you nd up doing!

Thanks. I have visited NW Safe before and was pretty quickly upselling myself from what I thought I'd be shopping for, before ever even talking to anyone, LOL!
The National Magnum is Liberty's top of the line model. It's basically the same as the Presidential line but with external hinges. And the price I found on this used one is well under a new one. I know it's still not a TL rated safe, but that's not what I'm looking (to pay!) for.

Not sure how heavy your new safe is or the manpower you have to help, but I had to help a friend move a safe that was almost the size of a medium sized refrigerator- Stamped weight was 1,050#. We decided to take the door off and I'm glad we did. Had to use a small floor jack to lift the door off the hinges once the door was open. Door came off smoothly and it saved a couple hundred pounds going that route. There were 3 of us and was tough but we did it. Getting the door back on was a little tricky but manageable. It took a little while trying to line up the upper/lower hinges while lowering the door via floor jack and someone stabilizing it. Hope that helps!

Sounds like you know your stuff, brother :thumbsup2:

NW Safe is a great education, thus the Reccs ...

Glad you found a good deal, good luck with your moving of the safe :cheers2:
