At 1:50 p.m. on Wednesday September 5, 2018, one of the deputies on our Crime Suppression Team was driving southbound on Golden Given Rd. E. in Tacoma when he spotted a stolen white Honda Accord in front of him. The deputy followed after the stolen car as it turned eastbound onto 72nd St. E., then immediately northbound onto L St.; the deputy activated his lights and sirens and attempted to pull over the vehicle.
The driver of the stolen Honda accelerated and continued northbound on L St. for several blocks before slowing to make a turn; the deputy performed a PIT maneuver on the stolen car, causing it to spin onto the shoulder and contact a boulder. The driver was able to regain control of the vehicle and continued to flee throughout the neighborhood while making multiple turns, running stop signs, and at one point intentionally striking the push bars on the deputy's patrol vehicle.
A second CST unit joined in following after the stolen car; as the second unit took over as the lead, the suspect suddenly rammed the side of their patrol vehicle. The deputies were able perform another PIT maneuver in the 1100 block of E. 65th St., which safely spun the stolen vehicle to a stop.
The driver was ordered out of the vehicle and instructed to get on the ground; as the suspect was laying down, the vehicle began to roll backwards (due to being left in reverse by the suspect) and it nearly rolled over the suspect's legs. One of our deputies jumped into the car and quickly pulled the emergency brake, preventing any injury to the suspect. the deputy removed a shaved key from the ignition and a passenger was also removed from the stolen vehicle. The suspect was found in possession of an additional shaved key; the interior of the stolen Honda was stripped, the dashboard was destroyed, and the radio was missing.
The suspect told the deputies that he fled because he got "spooked" and "panicked" due to an outstanding warrant. the suspect denied knowing that the car was stolen, but could not provide any details on who owned the car or where he got it from. The passenger was identified as the suspect's girlfriend; she also said that she did not know the car was stolen and said she did not know why her boyfriend fled from the deputies.
The 26 year old male suspect was booked into the Pierce County Jail for Assault in the 2nd degree, Attempting to Elude a Pursuing Police Vehicle, Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Possession of Burglary Tools, plus an active warrant for Domestic Violence Malicious Mischief; it was his 28th time being arrested. The suspect was just recently released from prison after being convicted of Taking a Motor Vehicle Without Permission and Felony Pursuit/Elude.
The Honda Accord was determined to have been stolen approximately 6 days earlier from an apartment complex on 44th St. in the City of Tacoma.
26 years old.
Arrested 28 times.
At what point do you just skip everything and go to summary execution?
Thanks WA, for being 'tough on crime'......
