It was a firework equal to 1/4 stick of dynamite. And had been sitting in the basement for a long time.
I'm not buying that they thought they were candles.
Maybe they found them when they went looking for candles. But they knew they weren't candles. And decided to have some fun lighting them...
She probably lit one with way too short of a fuse. Then they claimed ignorance because they knew it was illegal.

Not dynamite, or even equivalent. Commonly called "quarter stick", "M-1000", "silver salute", or as the feds call it "illegal explosive device". On an Indian reservation firework stand it's called "the good shit in the back". Has about an ounce of perchlorate/aluminum flash powder. The stuff they put in fire crackers. Felony to possess any ground salutes with over 50 mg of flashpowder without a license. The fuse looks like a treated piece of string.
Try buying perchlorate and aluminum flour online, probably be delivered by your local ATF agents.
Back when I was a PGI member and had a license, went to meetings of firework enthusiasts and display promoters. Sitting in a bar and all of a sudden the sky lit up a brilliant white or green with a thunderous 'BOOM!'. Someone would say "Oh, cool. Flash is here". He always made an entrance, carried a few of those 'candles' around in his jacket pocket. We kept having to find new meeting places.

Those so called 1/4 sticks are not even close to a real quarter stick of dynamite. First off they are not even the same kind of explosive. Those are full of powder and considered a "low explosive" like black powder. Dynamite is a much faster explosion and is classified as a "High Explosive".
Big difference.
The bottom planks of an old dynamite box are probably more potent than those indian poppers.

Yup. Method of detonation, brisance, detonation pressure, and VoD (velocity of detonation). Difference between apples and bowling balls.

Fracking sheep. Jeebus. Who in their right minds would allow that? Freedom is dead. But we feel so secure!

We used to buy 55 gallon drums of AP for group buys in our local rocketry club. Not sure if rules have changed in the last 10 years but no paperwork needed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Ammonium perchlorate isn't used in flash powder nor is it suited for such. Ya, it's used in solid rocket fuel. I was talking about some of it's chlorate and perchlorate cousins. Now ATF is going after AP too. Between ATF and DEA watch lists, surprised there are any chemistry majors anymore. Nowadays you can get busted for having two test tubes, half a pack of Sudafed, and some red devil lye in your house. "Due to increased Department of Homeland Security (DHS) concerns, we we are placing new restrictions on all Ammonium Perchlorate (AP) purchases. Effective immediately, all purchasers of AP must have a Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA) L2 or higher certification on file with RCS, or provide evidence that they are a legitimate business, government or academic customer."
